Making Homemade Pizza With An Ooni Pizza Oven

This post is less of a how-to post and more of a brag. Not really but kind of. Here at Shit’s Not That Difficult we pride ourselves on easy and cheap solutions for pursuing life and hobbies, but this post is not in that essence at all. This is about making some amazing pizza with a fancy piece of equipment, even though it is not necessary.

Last week I didn’t post because I turned a whopping 27. Some amazing friends and my partner got me an Ooni pizza oven. I also am not a bragger often, but it is hard to not brag about the amazing people I have in my life.

Differences in the pizza baking

First things first, it is the same exact process as described in my Woodfire or Neapolitan pizza recipes. It just takes about 1-2 minutes to cook instead. The oven ranges from 700°F – 900°F and only takes about 10 minutes to fully heat up. Brag.

We have it hooked up with the propane currently, but this model has the ability to be woodburning as well. That will probably be a post in itself, us learning how-to woodburn and be official.

differences in the pizza taste

It tastes like actual Neapolitan pizza you can get at a woodfire pizza restaurant! I know that sounds silly, but I have been trying to recreate that taste and authenticity for years and it makes me want to cry finally being able to achieve it.

The leoparding adds much more flavor than I could have expected. Leoparding comes from high hydration dough with a good gluten structure that forms bubbles in the pizza crust while it cooks at a high heat. This is hard to achieve with conventional oven temperatures, even with the broil on.

Also, the shorter cook time just creates a better chewiness texture. It is really hard to describe past that, which isn’t what you want to necessarily admit to while writing a “foodish” blog. An inability to describe a flavor. Trust me though, it is just a better flavor of chewiness.

Needless to say, I am very lucky. This oven is going to lead to so many amazing meals and I highly recommend finding a friend that has one and you can piggy back off the greatness of flavor and taste.
