Fresh Ginger Tea – A Must Have For Winter

As you likely know by now, I LOVE a good tea. I especially love teas that that are warming and soothing, especially in the winter months (and even more during cold and flu season!). Ginger has quickly become one of my favorites and it checks every box!

I have been making this ginger tea regularly this winter when:

  1. Am feeling cold and want a drink that will help me warm up, or
  2. Have a stomach ache or sore throat, or
  3. Am suffering from period cramping, or
  4. Just feel like drinking it, I love the flavor of ginger.

Ginger Tea Recipe

This recipe is ridiculously simple and makes the best ginger tea, in my opinion. It may take a few more minutes than a typical tea bag would, but the flavor it completely worth it!

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • Fresh ginger root
  • honey (optional)
  • lemon (optional)

Process:

  1. Boil water
  2. grate fresh ginger, I use a zester to create a pulp. I recommend 1 tsp per 8 ounces of water, but play around with the amounts until you get your ideal flavor!
  3. place the pulp in a tea ball or strainer and allow to steep, covered, for at least 15 minutes.
  4. remove pulp from tea and add honey and lemon juice to taste (optional)

The Benefits of Ginger

Ginger contains an antioxidant called gingerol, which is known to aid in digestion, reduce nausea, and is both anti-bacterial AND anti-viral, making it a great aid in fighting sickness.

Other research has suggested that ginger is helpful in reducing pain in the body, especially menstrual cramps. I have also seen the benefit of ginger usage for pain reduction in this area. I have found that it can make a significant difference to the intensity of cramps! In herbalism, ginger is known to have warming properties (which you can definitely feel when drinking), which is believed to assist in circulatory function, getting your blood moving. This may be a contributing factor to its effectiveness in this area.

Ginger is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties and there is promising research linking ginger to helping reduce the risk of developing neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Let me know if you’re a ginger lover like I am and enjoy this recipe! – Hailey
