How To Dry Your Herbs and Save Them!

My herbs have recently began to overgrow their garden space, so I figured it was about time to cut them and start drying them to save. This luckily is pretty self-explanatory but if you are like me and want to make sure you are doing it right – here is the easy post to read to tell you that you indeed are!

SPOILER: At the end of this article are extremely precious pictures of our kitten. He turned 1 yesterday and I think his cuteness needs to be shared. And if you are a person that likes to read about herbs and how to dry them, I think you will be the perfect vessel for his cuteness.

Drying your herbs

Drying the herbs is really as easy as it sounds. Here is a step by step guide:

  1. Grab the herb in my hand and use scissors to cut the stems towards the base of the plant
  2. Tie the stems with twine, ribbon, or whatever else you have that would work
  3. Hang them in a room of your house to dry!
  4. Let them dry until they are fully dry. 2-4 weeks usually – but that can vary!

Yes it really is that easy. You can rotate them if you want, you can check on them daily if you want. Honestly I just tie them up and forget about them for a couple weeks. I have let them hang for 6 weeks with no issue.

Saving your dried herbs

This step is even easier! You can complete it in about 10 minutes and you have beautifully aromatic herbs to cook with into the colder months.

  1. Use a food processor/blender/spice crusher/dry hands to break up the herbs into smaller pieces
  2. Store the herbs in a mason jar! Try not to have the jar right above the stove (You don’t want humidity to leak in)

My herbs have been drying for approximately a week. I will most likely keep them hanging for at least 2.5 weeks. I have mine stored in our guest room just hanging where the cat can’t reach them.

Isn’t that so beautifully simple? This year is my first year growing peppermint and we will have so much of the dried peppermint to make tea with throughout the winter! Whelp, after that easy read, here is a precious picture of Dawg, our cat.
