DIY Greenhouse – Cheap and Portable

This DIY greenhouse is the perfect spring project and can make for another cheap and reusable gardening tool.

A lot of greenhouses for sale or DIY alternatives on the internet are expensive, or made from material that will break after a couple of years. Not to say this plastic bin is invincible, but it is $15 from Target and takes about 10 minutes to make.

I recently had a post about how I grow seeds at home for my garden – you can check it out here if you want more info. This greenhouse currently fits 120+ seedlings using these seed-starting trays I have.

What you need
  • Clear plastic bin
    • Ideally 6″-8″ deep
  • A drill

Yes that is really is it! Having a drill handy is helpful, but maybe not needed? Depending how strong you can be with a screwdriver, and your will to fight the plastic.

How to make it
  1. Flip the bin over
  2. Drill holes in the bin!
  3. Fill the bin with your seedlings

Honestly this couldn’t be any easier to make! I am not sure how many holes per square foot you need, but I just added as many as I wanted. Sorry if you want more info.

Greenhouse in use

This greenhouse works in a window that gets good light, with a grow-light, or outside. However, if you are putting this greenhouse outside, make sure it is warm enough!

I always assume that the greenhouse will be about 20ยฐ warmer inside, while in the sun. Which means this greenhouse does well in the spring once it is over 45ยฐ and will need to be brought in once the night starts to cool off, which makes the portable nature of this so perfect! Carry in all your seedlings in one trip.

If you noticed that the tray that my seedlings are growing in fit perfectly in the greenhouse, you are correct. And it was a happy accident. I didn’t measure out the trays prior to going to Target and was very happy to find they fit like a glove.
