Freezing In-Season Fruits To Save Money

This might sound a bit obvious, but there are a lot of people who wouldn’t think to do this to save money! When fruits are in-season they cost less and most fruits can be processed and frozen.

This isn’t going to be a How-To in the normal sense, but more of a PSA to try this out and save money.

Processing and freezing

This really depends on the fruit type, but I will use mangos as my example for this.

Boxes of mangos go on sale at Sam’s club in my area in December and January and it’s usually 8lbs of mangos for $8-10. Buying a 3lb bag of frozen mangos usually costs around the same. Yes the mangos will lose weight when you take out the mango seed, but you are still getting a great deal!

To process the mangos, I peel the skin off and cut off the mango meat off the core.

With most fruits, you are able to just process them how you normally would to eat them, then throw them in the freezer! Yes it’s really that simple

To freeze the mangos, I put them in smaller Tupperware containers and when I want to use them, I pull them out to thaw slightly before use.

It’s mostly a matter of time savings verses cost savings, but some fruits are even easier than mangos to do this with!

This “hack” requires time and space in a freezer so it might not be applicable for all – but if it works for you, give it a try!

Here is a website that has a good resource of In-season fruits and vegetables! You may remember my rant about in-season vegetables and fruits in my roasted beets and carrot recipe – but supporting local small farms is super important and can be a great sense of community. A lot of fruits may not be grown locally, but you can enjoy your local produce options all year long with this method!
