Good question, asked by no one! But I love yapping into the void, so I will tell you how my Winter Sowing projects worked out.
Here is the quick answer if you don’t want all the details: They worked out awesome. The clover, the creeping thyme, the vegetables, and the wildflowers all came up.
Vegetables
The vegetables had the least success; however, I think that was mostly user error sadly.
My tomatoes, beets, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts all grew great with the winter sowing method. However, my peppers didn’t grow. This could have been just that peppers are a hot weather plant and they didn’t like the cold, but that theory doesn’t hold a lot of water because the tomatoes grew no problem.
The only other thing I can think that of that could cause them not to grow…is the fact that most of my vegetable milk jugs fell on their sides when the snow started melting and the dirt got all jostled up. Using the occam’s razor principle, I will be under the assumption it was my user error that caused the issues. I plan to re-test next year to know for certain.
Wildflowers
Wildflowers were the only seeds that I tried winter sowing prior to this year. Similar to my last attempt, I was able to grow wildflowers pretty spectacularly.
Grasses
All of the clover and creeping thyme I planted grew perfectly with the winter sowing method. I plan to transplant all of those items out of their milk jugs this week.
The big bluestem grass has sprouted but hasn’t started getting big yet. My theory is that they are a warm season perennial and it hasn’t gotten very warm in Maine yet this year. I will be transplanting them into the ground this week too, and hoping they take off.
I plan to try winter sowing more vegetables next year and I will do a more “compare and contrast” style with multiple vegetable types and compare to how they did in the seedling phase and growing season compared to vegetables I grow inside.
