My First Time Fall Gardening

I had a lot to say and did a lot of research to talk about when it came to starting my first “real” gardening venture. As I had previously mentioned, I gardened for a couple of years but this year is when I finally tried to become a “gardener”.

From my research, I learned that a lot of people garden all throughout the year in different ways. A traditional summer garden was my main goal was this year, but I also dabbled in winter sowing and now fall gardening.

What is winter sowing? Usually it is a technique of sowing seeds in the winter within containers. The premise is that once spring starts, the seeds will germinate naturally outside in a mini-greenhouse without a need of indoor sowing or a grow-light. This easy technique is perfect for me, and the Shit’s Not That Difficult community. We will get into winter sowing more this winter!

Fall gardening

Fall gardening and spring gardening usually go hand-in-hand with the same vegetables you grow. A lot of leafy-greens, root vegetables, and Brassica vegetables. Brassica veggies are some of my fav to eat, including but not limited to: cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower.

A couple years ago, I ordered seeds for green cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. I planted them not realizing they like colder weather. None of these vegetables grow well past 70°, so a couple years ago my vegetables started but never properly grew. Now I know why! They like to be planted in fall or spring.

I never had time this spring after our garden drama. In 2024 I will try spring gardening too!

What Did I plant this fall?

I have no idea! Well, I kind of know. I planted some beans/peas along the tomato trellis poles, I planted more arugula, and the rest is a mystery.

Back in August, I planted 2 seedlings each of the green cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower seeds I had previously bought. I didn’t label them, not all of the seeds germinated, and they all look similar as seedlings.

I planted them and I will find out what they are when they grow! I had a super busy summer, so this learning on the fly method for trying fall planting is going to be my best method, and hopefully I can use what I learn to have a better harvest in the spring.

Also, I just ordered some hardneck garlic bulbs to plant this fall. I have never planted garlic, but I eat so much of it that I can’t imagine it is possible for me to fail.

Fall harvesting

On a different note, I am still getting plenty of a harvest into late September. Hopefully the remaining tomatoes on the vine will continue to ripen while it starts to getting cooler at night.

And I finally got 1 pumpkin to grow! I am pretty psyched about it!
