How To Make Homemade Chicken Stock

Hi all – Hailey and I are back this week after our holiday break! I am sure we all want to relax and make our stomachs feel soothed after the weeks of cookies, drinking, and lots of food. Cooking with/drinking homemade stock is a super easy way to heal your stomach. Plus it is quick, simple to make, and cheap!

This recipe is made using just rotisserie chicken bones and water. We love to get rotisserie chicken to make buffalo chicken dip, but we also use rotisserie chicken for just about everything, because why wouldn’t you.

Ingredients
  • Rotisserie chicken, meat removed
  • Water
  • Salt (optional)

Alternatives options: Seared beef bones, turkey bones, leftover vegetables (roasted), general chicken bones

Recipe
  1. Take the meat off the bone of the rotisserie chicken
  2. Add the bones into a large stock pot
  3. Fill the stock pot up with water (fill the pot with water, twice as high as the chicken bones)
  4. Bring the liquid to a boil, then simmer for 3-5 hours
    • Feel free to add more water and simmer until it looks like all the gelatin is off the bones. Sometimes I left mine simmer for 8 hours!
  5. Optional: Salt to flavor
  6. Once cooled down, strain out the bones and put your stock into your Tupperware
    • Freeze if you are not going to use it within the next couple of days!

Why make homemade chicken stock?

Who doesn’t want a great brothy meal when it is cold out? I make rotisserie chicken stock so much throughout the year, but especially during the winter. The simmering process warms up the house an extra little bit, along with providing a cheap and hearty meal.

Also, bone broth is great for your stomach, hair, nails, and joints. The collagen/gelatin that you get works great for soothing inflamed stomachs, which is something most people desperately need after the holidays/New Years Eve. It also provides a lot of nutrients and provides electrolytes to improve hydration. Collagen is great in general for joint health, and hair/skin/nail health.

Hailey’s most recent post (Tart Cherry Gummies For Relaxation) she also addressed how good gelatin is for you. Check it out if you want more info.

But most importantly, we just left 2023. I don’t have to tell everyone how expensive going to the grocery store is. Why spend the crazy amount of money on premade broth, if you can get a rotisserie chicken at Sam’s club for $5! You get 1.5lbs of pre-cooked chicken meat and can make a delicious stock to use in your cooking/just to drink.
