Roasted Miso Japanese Turnips Recipe

This year is my first time getting a CSA (Community supported agriculture) and I have been getting a bunch of new vegetables to try. Radishes, turnips, patty-pan squash, etc.

These new vegetables have been awesome to try, but it also means I need to learn how to cook them. Most Hakurei (Japanese) turnip recipes I saw were using them raw in a salad or roasting them to be a yummy side dish. I wanted to try eating them roasted, so this recipe came from that!

This recipes requires VERY little work and ingredients, but packs a lot of flavor. This recipe takes around 45 minutes.

Ingredients
  • Turnips (I used Japanese turnips)
  • Miso paste
  • Oil, salt, pepper, seasonings

*I don’t have any measurements on this recipe, because honestly using too much or too little of any of the above won’t make or break the dish. It is a super yummy, umami flavored turnip. Just add as much miso paste as you want to try.

Recipe
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375°
  2. Cut the greens off the turnips
    • If you save the greens, you can add them to your compost or sauté them in some oil with salt + pepper. They taste similar to spinach
  3. Slice the turnips into 4 pieces each
  4. Add your turnips into a bowl, and add the miso paste, oil, salt, pepper + any other seasonings, and mix
  5. Cook in the oven for 30-45 minutes, based on how soft you want your turnips

This recipe adds such an amazing umami flavor to any dish. We ate this recently with some salmon and the turnip greens sauteed with some mushrooms. I mean WOW. It all tasted so rich and deep with flavor, you didn’t even realize how healthy you are eating.
